Privacy Policy

layoffsurvival.com  ·  Last updated: June 12, 2025
🔒
The short version: layoffsurvival.com does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information you enter into the calculator. All calculations happen entirely in your browser. We do use Google AdSense which may use cookies for ad personalization — this is explained fully below.
📅 Effective Date: June 12, 2025

1. 🏛️ Who We Are

layoffsurvival.com ("we," "us," or "our") operates the website located at layoffsurvival.com, which provides a free, browser-based layoff survival calculator for informational purposes only.

This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information in connection with your use of our website. By using this site, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

Important: layoffsurvival.com is an informational tool only and does not provide financial or legal advice. Nothing on this site creates an advisory relationship. Please consult a licensed financial advisor or attorney for advice specific to your situation.

2. 📋 Information We Collect

We operate a privacy-first, no-backend tool. Here is exactly what we collect and do not collect:

What we DO NOT collect:

  • Your name, email address, or any contact information
  • The financial figures you enter into the calculator (assets, home value, income)
  • Your legal situation details (custody, alimony, asset disputes)
  • Any personally identifiable information through the calculator itself
  • Credit card or payment information (the tool is free)
  • Your location beyond what your browser voluntarily provides to Google for ads

What we may collect through third-party services:

  • Anonymous usage data via Google Analytics (page views, time on site, device type) — if enabled
  • Ad interaction data via Google AdSense (whether you viewed or clicked an advertisement)
  • Technical information such as browser type, operating system, and referring URL (standard web server logs)

3. 💾 Calculator Data & localStorage

To provide a better experience, the calculator saves your inputs (such as state, years married, home value, and expense amounts) in your browser's localStorage. This means:

  • Your data is stored only on your own device — it never leaves your browser
  • We cannot access, read, or retrieve this data — it is invisible to us
  • The data persists between sessions so you can return to your scenario without re-entering everything
  • You can delete this data at any time using the "Reset" button in the calculator, or by clearing your browser's localStorage in your browser settings
How to clear your calculator data manually:
Chrome/Edge: Settings → Privacy and Security → Clear browsing data → Cached images and files / Site data
Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Clear Data → Cached Web Content
Safari: Preferences → Advanced → Manage Website Data

4. 📢 Google AdSense & Advertising

layoffsurvival.com uses Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google AdSense is a program run by Google LLC that allows websites to earn revenue by displaying relevant ads.

How Google AdSense works:

  • Google uses cookies and similar tracking technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to our site and other sites on the internet
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to layoffsurvival.com and/or other sites on the internet
  • You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings
  • Alternatively, you can opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalized advertising by visiting www.aboutads.info

Google AdSense may collect and use data about your device and browsing activity in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy. We do not control Google's data practices and encourage you to review their policy directly.

Non-personalized ads: If you prefer not to receive personalized ads, you can request non-personalized ads through the Google opt-out link above. Non-personalized ads are still shown but are based on contextual information (the topic of the page) rather than your browsing history.

5. 📊 Analytics

We may use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our site. Google Analytics collects information such as:

  • Pages visited and time spent on each page
  • Browser type and operating system
  • General geographic region (country/city level only — not your precise address)
  • Referring website (how you arrived at our site)
  • Device type (desktop, mobile, tablet)

This information is used in aggregate form to improve our tool and content. We do not use analytics data to identify individual users.

You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

6. 🍪 Cookies

Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your browser. layoffsurvival.com uses the following types of cookies:

  • Essential cookies: The calculator uses browser localStorage (not traditional cookies) to save your inputs. localStorage is technically distinct from cookies — it stores data locally on your device and is not transmitted to any server.
  • Advertising cookies: Google AdSense sets cookies on your device to serve relevant advertisements. These are set by Google, not by us. They may include the DoubleClick cookie, which Google uses to track ad impressions, clicks, and conversions.
  • Analytics cookies: Google Analytics sets cookies to track aggregate, anonymous usage statistics.

You can control or disable cookies through your browser settings. Note that disabling cookies may affect the display of advertisements on this site but will not affect the calculator's functionality (which uses localStorage, not cookies).

7. 🔗 Third-Party Links

Our site may contain links to third-party websites, including unemployment resources, health insurance marketplaces, and financial planning services. These links are provided for your convenience.

We do not control the content or privacy practices of these external sites. When you click a third-party link and leave layoffsurvival.com, you are subject to that website's privacy policy. We encourage you to review the privacy policy of any site you visit.

The presence of a link does not constitute an endorsement or recommendation of the linked website or its services.

8. 👶 Children's Privacy

layoffsurvival.com is intended for use by adults aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect any information from children under the age of 13.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 13 has provided information through our site, please contact us and we will take appropriate action. Because we do not collect personal information through the calculator itself, there is no user data for us to delete — but we will investigate any concerns promptly.

9. ✅ Your Rights

Because layoffsurvival.com does not collect personal information through its calculator, most traditional privacy rights (access, correction, deletion) apply to data held by our third-party partners (Google) rather than to us directly.

You have the right to:

  • Delete your calculator data — use the "Reset" button in the tool or clear your browser's localStorage
  • Opt out of personalized Google advertising — visit Google Ads Settings
  • Opt out of Google Analytics — install the Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on
  • Disable cookies — through your browser's privacy settings
  • Request information about what data (if any) we hold about you — contact us

10. 🌴 California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) provides you with additional rights regarding your personal information.

Because layoffsurvival.com does not sell personal information and does not collect personal information through the calculator itself, many CCPA provisions do not apply in the traditional sense. However, we are committed to transparency:

  • We do not sell your personal information to any third party
  • We do not share your calculator inputs with any third party
  • Google AdSense's use of cookies for advertising purposes may constitute "sharing" under CCPA's expanded definition — you can opt out via Google's Ad Settings
  • To exercise your CCPA rights, contact us and we will respond within 45 days

11. 🇪🇺 European Users (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) may apply to how Google processes your data in connection with ads shown on our site.

Our legal basis for processing (via Google AdSense) is legitimate interests in generating revenue to keep the tool free, and in some cases, consent for personalized advertising where required.

You have the right to:

  • Access personal data held about you by Google
  • Rectify inaccurate data
  • Erase your data ("right to be forgotten")
  • Object to processing or restrict it
  • Data portability
  • Lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority

To exercise rights related to Google's data processing, visit Google's Privacy Policy or their Data & Privacy page. For any questions specific to layoffsurvival.com, contact us.

12. 🔄 Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. When we update this policy, we will:

  • Update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page
  • Post the revised policy at this URL

We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of layoffsurvival.com after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
